These students have been expelled for obtaining and making use of bogus certificates to get admission

The new session has begun at Delhi University, but one of its most prestigious colleges, Ramjas, is still caught in the middle of the fake certificates scam that had rocked the varsity a few months ago. An internal inquiry at the college has found 21 students who got admission using phony marksheets and certificates. All of them have been expelled.u00a0u00a0

Of the 21, 18 are from B Com (Pass), two from B Com (Honours) and one from BA (Pass). The college on Monday had put up the list of the errant students on its notice board saying that their admission stands cancelled with immediate effect.

"This has happened for the first time that a complete list of students has been found fake. This is a crime more on the part of parents than the students.u00a0 The admissions of all these students have been cancelled. Surprisingly, most of them hail from Delhi itself, and there percentages were also really low, ranging from 50 - 55 per cent, which they have forged into 90- 95 per cent," said Prof G S Chilana, one of the members of the committee formed by the college to look into the matter.

More to come?
The college administration suspects more cases of fake marksheets and is looking into the Economics and Statistics departments as the subjects had the highest cut-offs. A student of the college, on the condition of anonymity, said: "The list includes one of my friends from B Com (H). She came to the class today as she had not seen the notice board, but was turned out by the teacher."

"The issue has saddened me a lot. I don't know who to blame as the issue involves so many agencies directly and indirectly to cause such a blunder. Though, there have been a few rare individual cases in the past, but, this is just unprecedented. I think this technology of making fool proof certificates has come new and these students have robbed some genuine students of their rightful seat," a senior college official said.

Final touches
While, Dr Rajendra Prasad, Principal, Ramjas College said, "I have formed a committee to look into the matter. While, they have submitted the report, I still have to finalise things. The first step on our part would be to lodge an FIR and handover the cases to the police." Owing to the outrage of severely high- cut offs and high percentages this year, especially in the field of commerce, many colleges of the university have admitted more students than there are seats. Ramjas College, which has about 3,000 steats, has about 4,450 students under its roof.

Inquiries in the offing
While other colleges like Miranda, Hindu, Hansraj and Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) have not received any such cases of forgery, yet after this revelation, they say they are compelled to enquire into the matter. P C Jain, principal, SRCC said, "We have not found any such case of forgery yet. We had carefully examined all the documents at the time of admissions. Dr Pratibha Jolly, principal, Miranda House, said, "We carried out the admission process with great detail. Now, after receiving this information, I think I will order a fresh inquiry into the matter." As Delhi University finds itself in the thick of a scam with revelations that even students with more than 90 per cent marks gained admission via forged caste certificates through the efforts of a gang that was recently busted, university authorities claim that it is not easy to identify forged certificates and are unsure about what the university can do to implement stricter rules to prevent fraudulent admission. Students from affluent families are major targets of such groups which promise admissions in reputed colleges, sometimes even duping them of huge sums of money.
