Three jail inmates have been booked for rioting inside the Yerawada Central Prison at barrack number two on Sunday night.
The inmates have been identified as Mangal Arjun Dhondiram, Santosh Dakhle and Sagar Gani Labade. They were accused in cases like house break-in and were lodged at Yerawada Central prison for the last few months.
Jail guard Ashok Dhondirao Nigde (39) has lodged a complaint in this case at the Yerawada police station.
The trio allegedly hit a murder accused Pradeep Balu Ghule on the head with a carom board following a petty dispute and past rivalry. They further thrashed four other prisoners who tried to intervene and stop the brawl.
Jail Superintendent Sharad Khatavkar said: "Ghule and the three inmates who attacked him are between 18 and 23 years of age and hence were kept in the same barrack. Owing to some petty dispute, they rammed the carom board on Ghule's head around 10.30 pm on Sunday and further beat up those prisoners who tried to settle the dispute."
Ghule received injuries on his head and other body parts and was taken to the Sassoon hospital.
A few more prisoners received minor injuries. Assistant police inspector M B Khandale is investigating the case.
