There could be an Einstein among us. We are trying to make science more popular among school children.u00a0 Einstein was bad at schoolwork but brought the world a life changing equation. He wasn't a born genius," says Meena Kharatmal, scientific officer at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education in Mankhurd.
On the occasion of National Science Day on February 28, celebrated to honour Sir CV Raman who discovered the Raman effect in 1928, the Centre has planned an entire day of demonstrations and experiments that mix fun with learning.
Ek glassy, do glassy
Learn glass blowing with specially trained technicians from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Glass blowing is a process that moulds containers by blowing air into a molten blob of glass through a blowpipe. Participants can watch the demonstration before being allowed to try their hand at it.
That's cool!
Cryogenics refers to the study of production of very low temperature, essentially below 150 C. Scientific officer Vinod Kumar Sonawane will demonstrate experiments with liquid nitrogen that is used to store biological fluids like blood, sperm, eggs and can even be used for cryonic preservation of humans and pets for future reanimation.

Take a journey through time, when the Earth was said to be flat, or planets were considered the center of the universe and surgery was conducted without anesthesia. The trial and error of scientists around the now spherical Earth is explained through a maze of display boards and illustrations. Learn about the balance of growth versus decay explained in the Chinese calendar and how Indian healers were practicing plastic surgery long before Rhinoplasty got its name.
The XX effect
The Centre recognises girl power in various fields of science, with an entire room dedicated to women scientists. An activity held at the Centre earlier had school children participate in an event where they were asked to draw an image of what they thought a scientist would look like. Only one child ended up drawing a woman. This, the officers say, proved the need for a gender exhibition.
The room pays tribute to some leading ladies in lab coats, including Barbara McClintock who won the Nobel Pirze in medicine for her discovery of "jumping genes" that explain hereditary influences.u00a0u00a0
