There is something about munching on a chewy cookie. Not crispy, not cakey, not crunchy, not crumbly. It's the feeling that comes from sinking your teeth into its crisp exterior only to find it soft inside.

We bit into this kind of bliss as we ate a cookie that emerged fresh off the oven, courtesy two youngsters who have started a home-based bakery called Loafing Around.

The Double Chocolate Chip cookie tasted a lot like the delish one we specially make the trip to Subway for, only that we knew that this one was made specially for us and not mass-produced in thousands. Homemade, after all, is homemade.

At a home kitchen in Goregaon, Reema Venkat and her IHM (The Institute of Hotel Management) batch mate Talib Hussain have been churning baked goodies and savouries for three months. Their menu features a range of breads (garlic, whole wheat, French, banana), tarts (garlic and mushroom, chocolate, egg and peas, lemon), puffs (vegetable, chicken), pies (apple, brownie), flavoured macaroons, cookies (chocolate and butter), cakes, muffins (chocolate chip, blueberry, mango) and chocolates.

Talib tempted us to try a slice of the lattice-crusted apple pie that beckoned us from the table. "We make this with shortcrust instead of maida, and will add honey or molasses for a healthy touch," he says. With a buttery flavour and crumbly texture, the pie was easily one of the best we've had. The crust wasn't soggy and the sweetness was just simply divine.

Noticing our enthusiasm, Reema cajoled us to indulge in Bits of Heaven -- a recipe that moves away from the traditional to experimental.

It comes as a delicious slice of shortcrust with butterscotch and white chocolate. If you are a butterscotch fan like us, you will be licking the sticky filling off the butter paper, decorum be damned. The duo also swears by their chocolates with fillings like coffee, caramel, orange peel and dry fruits. We got caramel again, but we weren't complaining. The caramel oozed out of the chocolate when we popped it in our mouth, making us emit dubious sounds.

"Though personally, I would love for everything to be made in chocolate, we can tweak our offerings to suit your preference and health requirements," shares Reema. We cannot wait to stuff our faces with The Dark Lord -- a dome-shaped cake of rich dark chocolate mousse and hazelnut sponge. But were more than happy to make do with the chewy cookie until then.
