The traffic movement on the busy Nrupatunga road was stopped for few minutes to allow the procession to reach the DGPs residence, a few yards away from the police headquarters. It was a surprise for the onlookers who have stopped on the footpath to catch a glimpse of the procession. "Such a gesture is rare and never seen before," said a senior police officer.

In the meanwhile, confusion prevailed till late evening yesterday, with the government not coming to a decision to appoint a DG&IGP. At last a fax message came to the police chief officer from the DPAR section, appointing ST Ramesh on the concurrent charges of DG&IGP in addition to his DGP (Training) department.

The officers and media were waiting at the DGP's office with a confused mind but they breathed a sigh once the order came out. Singh handed over his police baton to Ramesh and the latter assumed charge as DG&IGP (in-charge).

ST Ramesh said that the god has given him a chance to head the state police force and requested the officers present to extend support for better policing. "I have worked in many departments, and served impartially and will continue doing the same," he added.

Singh thanked the people of Karnataka who have showered their love and affection on him. He also thanked leaders of various political parties and his colleagues including, dalayaths, chamber orderlies, drivers, walkies and personal assistants."
