An inspector with Hinjewadi police station, Balasaheb Surve, was booked by the Anti Corruption Bureau for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 40,000 from a woman arrested for running a prostitution racket in the city.
Surve collected the amount through a middleman from the nephew of sex racket queen Kalyani Deshpande (44) of Pashan, who was arrested under the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA) on Saturday. The bribe was demanded by Surve not to press for extending police custody of Deshpande.
On Saturday, a magistrate court remanded Kalyani to two-days police custody after she was arrested by Surve for allegedly forcing three women into prostitution. Kalyani currently has 12 cases registered against her under PITA in the city, in the past 10 years.
Superintendent of Police (ACB, Pune) Sarang Awad said, "After Kalyani was sent to two-days police custody, inspector Surve demanded Rs 40,000 from her for not pressing for police custody during the next hearing.
He had demanded the money through Kalyani's nephew, Jatin Chawda, who approached us with the complaint on Saturday."
SP Awad added, "Surve's writer Hanif Shaikh was also arrested, as he had been involved in negotiations. On Sunday, Surve sent a private person, Rajesh Marwadi Kumbhar of Bavdhan, to accept the money near Bavdhan police chowky. We caught both of them red-handed around 10.30 am."
ACP Hemant Bhatt is further investigating the case. The ACB has appealed to citizens to contact them on 020-26122134/26132802, if any state government employee demands a bribe.
