Some of the best known names in education appear in list of deaulters on NAAC website

Almost a year has passed since the accreditation of top city institutes was made invalid, yet they have not got re-accreditation for themselves with the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

The institutes that have not complied are University of Pune, Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed University), Deccan College Post-graduate and Research Institute, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics and Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth.

Since the re-accreditations have not yet been made, the NAAC has put their names as defaulters on the website. "The names are mentioned because these institutions have not yet reapplied for reaccreditations," said a senior official from NAAC. "Once we pass the application after thorough research, the names will be removed from the list."

While some of the institutes are yet to apply for re-accreditation, the rest have done it and are waiting for an approval from NAAC.

"We will soon apply for the re-accreditation once our paperwork is done," said Dr R Nagarajan, officiating registrar, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics.

Dr Burak, Development Director, Bharati Vidyapeeth (deemed university) was surprised to know that Vidyapeeth's name was listed. He said, "We have already applied for the re-accreditation a couple of months ago."

An NAAC official said the authorities give two years to institutes to re-accredit their status from the date of invalidity. The current status is accredited in 2005. "It's a long process. Only after getting a satisfactory result
we re-accredit their status," he said.
