Confirming the news, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Thursday that Sami would be granted Indian citizenship from January 1, 2016.
Sami, who was staying for more than a decade in India, had been trying to get the Indian citizenship since long.
Union Home Ministry was mulling over granting him a citizenship by naturalisation in view of his distinguished contribution to Indian music.
He was allowed to stay indefinitely in India in August, following the non-renewal of his Pakistani passport.
