In a major relief to the state government, the Supreme Court yesterday gave its final nod to the best-five subjects formula for declaring results and admissions to first-year junior colleges for SSC students.

Speaking to MiD DAY, Ujjwaladevi Patil, chairperson of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) confirmed that the state counsel had won the argument in the apex court.

"The amendment made in the provisions of Maharashtra Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board Act to extend best-five formula's advantage to SSC students. The formula, which was challenged by parents and students of ICSE board, was allowed to continue.

"During an hour and a half long argument yesterday, our counsel provided enough evidence to establish why best-five was needed for SSC students. Eventually, the apex court gave the nod to the formula, making it a permanent formula. There will be no more temporary arrangement until the government itself decides to introduce another policy," added Patil.

In this formula, marks obtained by SSC students in best-five subjects would be counted, while other subjects in which they score lower marks would be ignored. When the formula was introduced, it rake up a controversy with ICSE schools managements and parents of students moving the apex court against the system, terming it an injustice to their wards.

The CBSE board also follows the best five formula, so there was no objection from the schools affiliated to the board. But ICSE-affiliated schools and their students were up in arms against the formula as they have subjects divided in three groups ufffd A, B and C ufffd with the third being a group practical subjects.
