Elsewhere, school students go around planting saplings. Their reward? They name plants after themselves

Bangalore's tiny eco-warriors have organised themselves into the Green Army, an initiative to make the city greener.

Students of Sophia School kicked off the initiative saplings on June 5 World Environment Day by planting 330 saplings. Students from other schools are joining in.

"Children are acting for Bangalore," said B N Shivshankar, founder, Mukthidhama. "They are aware of where we are heading and are planting saplings to bring back the green."u00a0u00a0

Students will plant green saplings twice a month across the city in places like schools, hospitals, temples and vacant lands. They will also name the saplings after them and care for the plants every day.

"It was wonderful seeing children planting saplings," said Yogesh P K, principal, Sophia School. "Small kids contributed to the environment. This is the best way to spread the message to save green."

The message
Mukthidhama volunteers will also educate children on the importance of green with the help of a short film.

They will visit private and government schools to get students to sign up for the green army.

"We help children who are setting an example by their deed," said Melwin, a volunteer. "We expect people from all walks of life to join them. That's how we hope to see a change."
