The BBMP has been breathing uneasy under the burden of mounds of torn dust-caked files and earning flak for its employees' snail's pace of work and alleged corrupt practices for ages. Not any more.
For, the BBMP Standing Committee yesterday cleared a proposal of around Rs 10-crore to bring the civic-body under the ambit of e-governance.

As part of the e-governance policy, all the 138 corporators will be provided with one laptop each under this project with the idea of making the Palike administration cent percent paperless.
Now, the BMMP will keep a track record of events from sanctioning of various development projects, pending work, and expenditure. And all this data will be available with both BBMP administration, IT department and corporators of all the wards.
Why e-governance?
The idea, according to BBMP officials, is to bring in transparency in the administration and to tighten the noose around the corporators who have to personally monitor projects and share the same with the department concerned once in a month.
And if someone wants to see the data of any particular project, he would have to just visit the BBMP website and click on the relevant link.u00a0The civic body is also planning to rope in different agencies to teach the corporators about the operation of laptops and different softwares used in e-governance.
"We wanted to make changes in the Palike administration style. And the Palike has cleared the project, which would cost around 10 crore. IT firms such as HCL, Infosys and Accenture have come forward to help with software. For now all the corporators will get Lenovo laptops worth 40,000 each.

The project is expected to be operational in a year's time," said Manjunath Raj, Standing Committee Chairman (Finance and Taxation).
Fast file movement
According to BBMP officials, the e-governance project will speed up movement of files. "The physical movement of files takes a lot of time.
E-governance will not only increase the speed of movement of files, but also nail officials and corporators who are infamous for taking money under the table," said B Khandre, BBMP public relations officer.
