Over 11,729 who jumped bail have been rounded up in the last few days
The city police have rounded up 11,729 anti-social elements who had jumped bail, of which 1,927 persons have been declared as proclaimed offenders as on March 1, and are yet to be arrested. There are 9,802 accused persons against whom warrants are pending execution.

After the city police chief directed police officers to register cases against proclaimed offenders, the cops were successful in registering 109 cases against 113 proclaimed offenders in the last week of February.
During the same period, the cops even registered 205 cases against 223 persons.
Initially, summons will be issued to an accused. If he fails to appear, a warrant will be issued against him. An accused failing to appear despite the warrant, used to be declared as a proclaimed offender.

If the accused are still not traceable, a copy of the notice will be pasted on the door of the accused's residence and a public system will be used to announce his name in the area.u00a0 In some cases it is very difficult for the police to trace the accused as few are from other states and others don't have own houses.
"Till 2006, there was no provision for filing a case against proclaimed offenders. However, now, with provisions in place, we can book them easily," said Alok Kumar, the joint commissioner of police, crime.
"By doing this, the crime rate will also come down. We keep doing this exercise regularly," Kumar added.
