Employees of state-run banks throughout the country will go on a one-day strike on Wednesday to protest against a proposed move to consolidate public sector banks.

The strike call has been given by the All India Bank Employees' Association and the All India Bank Officers' Association to all its affiliate members working at state-run, private and foreign banks, although the effect of the strike is expected to impact only some state-run banks.
Federal Bank, in a statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange said the strike may affect normal functioning of its branches.
However, members and units of the unions in Andhra Pradesh, have been kept out of the strike because of law and order problems arising due to the proposed bifurcation of the state.
"Taking into account the present serious political turmoil in Andhra Pradesh and the consequent disturbed law and order situation in many parts of the state, it has been felt expedient to exempt all our units and members in Andhra Pradesh from participation in our proposed All India Strike onu00a0 December 16," said a circular from the two unions.
