Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa today said Deputy Commissioners have been instructed to review the law and order situation in their districts every three months and to be vigilant. Addressing media here, the Chief Minister, after a review meeting with Deputy Commissioners, Chief Executive Officers of Zilla Panchayats and secretaries of various departments of various developmental works undertaken by government, said DCs had been instructed to visit the spot if any incident, however small, occurred to ensure the problem did not escalate and they were nipped in the bud.

Expressing satisfaction over the law and order situation, he said the overall situation had been peaceful, including in districts that were naxal-affected. He said elections had passed off peacefully even in districts such as Uttara Kannada, Shimoga, Chikamagalur and Udupi which had faced the naxal menace. He attributed this to the precautionary measures undertaken by the district authorities.

During the meeting, he directed the district officials to ensure that a conducive atmosphere be created where women, downtrodden and the oppressed too feel safe and secure. Asking the district administration to come down heavily on anti-social elements, he said if required the Goonda Act be implemented to keep these elements under check.

Speaking on the housing facilities created by the BJP government that has completed one year in office, Yeddyurappa said that in 2008-09, three lakh houses had been constructed for the poor. The district administration had been asked to shortlist beneficiaries. The CEOs and Tahsildars were asked to conduct a survey before finalising the list of beneficiaries. Yeddyurappa, whose style of leadership has come in for flak by some quarters of his cabinet, said he had decided to ensure that he would spare time for MLCs and MLAs and interact with them at a designated time.

He would also ensure that public had access to him by spending four days in a week in the Vidhan Soudha and spend two days of a week touring the state. He would hold Janata Darshana at his official residence "Krishna". On the agricultural sector, he said monsoon had picked up in all the districts and sowing in 4.2 lakh hectares had been completed. Adequate supply of fertilisers and seeds had been ensured. There were complaints of dealers selling fertilisers above the MRP rate citing transport expenses incurred. Such practice would not be tolerated and the government was ready to bear the expense of transportation, he said.
