Babbar Khalsa terrorist Jagtar Singh Hawara, who assassinated the then Punjab Chief Minister, is facing a life term

A Delhi court Monday directed Tihar Jail authorities to lodge Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorist Jagtar Singh Hawara in one of its cells.

Hawara, who masterminded the assassination of then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh at the secretariat complex in Chandigarh August 31, 1995, is facing a life term. He came back into limelight, in 2004, when he escaped from maximum security Burail jail in Chandigarh, along with 2 other Sikh prisoners (Jagtar Singh Tara and Paramjit Singh Bheora), the third one was a cook.

Delhi's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav sent Hawara, against whom two cases are pending in Delhi, to judicial remand and directed the Tihar Jail authorities to keep him in its cell.

Hawara was brought to Delhi from Burail after a warrant was issued against him on October 20.
A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Chandhigarh sentenced Hawara to death in July 2007 for the assassination of Beant Singh. The Punjab and Haryana High Court converted his death sentence to life
imprisonment this month.

The Asssassination

Beant Singh, then chief minister (1992-95), was credited with wiping out terrorism from Punjab by dealing with it with an iron hand along with then senior police official K.P.S. Gill. He was assassinated by a car bomb on August 31, 1995 in Chandigarh. The bomb killed eleven other people, including three members of Singh's security detail. Beant Singh was accompanied by his close friend Ranjodh Singh Mann on the day of assassination. Separatist group Babbar Khalsa claimed responsibility for the assassination, but "security authorities" were reported to be doubtful of the truth of that claim at that point. A 2006 press release by the Embassy of the United States in New Delhi indicated that the responsible organisation was the Khalistan Commando Force.
