Music producer Biddu might have shifted base from India to London, but hits like Kung-fu fighting and Aap Jaisa Koi continue to resonate in our '80s hearts. The boy who started his music career at the age of 16 in a cafe in Bangalore, has returned as a man who has sold over 38 million records worldwide. In the city to release his autobiography Made In India, Biddu tells us a little about his journey so far.
Namita Gupta: Where have you been all this while?
Biddu: I have spent the last three years in Spain working on my fiction book. But every publishing company offered me a deal to write my autobiography along with it. So, the first book that I took to writing will actually be out in the next six months, since the company wanted me to launch my autobiography before that. I had also worked on Indian Idol Abhijit Sawant's music album, but I didn't want to take the focus away from him. I've wanted to move from song writing to writing books for some time now.
NG: You seem to have the Midas Touch when it comes to spotting talent. What do you see in a person that gives you the sense that they have what it takes to make it big?
Biddu: Part of my job is to recognise an artiste's potential. I've worked with Sonu Nigam, Shaan, Alisha and Nazia. They had potential and all they needed was good music to back their talent.
NG: One truly memorable moment?
Biddu: I'm not someone who gets easily excited about anything. When I went to Japan to collect the World Song Contest Award in front of an audience of 20,000 people, my wife asked me why I wasn't jumping with joy, I said, 'It's all over now that I've won the prize.'
NG: One WTF moment?
Biddu: When people ask me if I would like to work with them, I say WTF. Why would I want to share my profit margins with them!
The launch of Biddu's autobiography 'Made In India' will be followed by a live performance by the author.
