The mishap in Malad occurred on Sunday night, about 12 hours after a cyclist was squashed by another bus at Dadar

Biker falls prey to killer BEST bus

Leon Pascal Rodrigues, a 22-year-old resident of Patel Compound located on the Orlem Tank Road in Malad (West), succumbed to head injuries he sustained after being run over by a BEST bus on Sunday night in Marve. He was declared dead on arrival at the Suvarna Hospital. It is believed that Leon died on the spot after his head was crushed under the vehicle’s rear tyre. Leon was employed at a mall here and was residing with his aunt. While his mother is in Dubai, Leon’s father had passed away a few years ago.

According to the police, the incident occurred on Sunday at 11.30 pm, when Leon was returning home from work. He was riding his Honda CBZ (MH02 BC2371) motorbike. The victim was near Lourdes colony, when bus number 272 (MH01 L 8411) knocked him down, and ran him over. Locals nabbed the bus driver while he was trying to flee the spot. Enraged by the incident, a mob pelted the bus with stones, breaking its rear windowpane. A police patrolling party calmed the crowd down and took the bus driver into custody.

Death blow
Chandrakant Gurav, senior police inspector of Malad police station, said, “Leon was rushed to the nearby Suvarna Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. Doctors said he succumbed to his head injuries.” Gurav added that bus driver Santosh Zende (37), a resident of SV Road in Goregaon, was arrested and booked under section 304 A (causing death due to negligence) of Indian Penal Code.

The police have seized the bus as well as Leon’s bike. To ascertain whether the accident occurred due to mechanical failure or human error, a thorough inspection of both the vehicles will be undertaken by the regional transport office. On the same day at 10.30 am cops arrested a 52-year-old BEST bus driver for allegedly running over a 17-year-old cyclist near Portuguese Church in Dadar (West).

Shubham Shinde was declared dead on arrival at KEM Hospital, the police said. MiD DAY had reported the matter yesterday (‘17-yr-old cyclist dies under BEST wheels’).
