The deceased were identified as Akshay Ramdas Pathare, a Std IX student, and Avinash Nanasaheb Pathare from Parner taluka in Ahmednagar district. Avinash's two daughters, Priyanka (4) and Pratiksha (3), were also riding pillion on the bike and suffered minor injuries.

After the accident, an angry mob of local residents led by social activists Sanjay Pachange, Shashikant Dasgude, Sambhaji Kardile and Bharat Borhade demonstrated against the highway authorities for neglecting the construction of a service road near the accident spot on the highway.

Pachange said Avinash ran a hotel near his residence."Avinash was riding the bike and the three children were riding pillion. They were going towards Pune and had just about reached Shirur around 9.45 am when a speeding ST bus from Aurangabad knocked down their motorcycle," Pachange said.
