After state government says Std XI admissions only on basis of marks, central board will provide mark-list to schools and education officials
Following the confusion among students of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) over the procedure for first-year junior college admissions from this year, the board has cleared the air and found a way out of the impasse. According to a new system the CBSE implemented from the academic year 2009-2010, students were only to get grades and not marks in their Std X board exams. In keeping with the policy, CBSE only declared grades to students, which were seen on the certificates given to the Std X pass-outs.

Last year colleges across the state calculated the marks according to the grades and calculation tables as explained by CBSE. But principals complain that this was a cumbersome process. "We needed someone to sit down and calculate all the marks. It takes a lot of time and ultimately leads to delay in the merit list," said Dr R B Pardeshi, principal of Fergusson College. This year the state government decided that all admissions would be done only on the basis of marks. Following this, both principals and students of CBSE schools approached the board for help so that students would not suffer.
The confusion has also arisen because from this year the board has allowed a section of its students to skip board exams and continue via school-based assessment. "But the problem is that while those who wrote school assessment got grades and are promoted to study in Std XI in the same CBSE schools, the others who gave board exams also got grades, which now have to be to converted to percentages. So we heard that the Maharashtra Government demanded a list of students who wrote the board exams and their marks," said a CBSE school principal.
Following this confusion, CBSE issued an official circular that says that a mark-list will be given out to all schools to facilitate students' admissions in state board colleges. "The students will be helped in filling up forms by schools as we will have a mark-list. And a copy of the mark-list is being sent to higher officials in the state government as well for verification," said a CBSE board official. Neelam Chakravarty, principal of DPS School, confirmed that principals had received instructions to help students in filling forms.
