Fire brigade called in to rescue 2 scooter riders trapped in trench near 'dangerous stretch'; car driver escapes unhurt

Two people came face-to-face with death when a car and a scooter had a head-on collision on the Sangamwadi Bridge Road and both vehicles landed in a 30-feet-deep trench.

The road is dangerous as there are no dividers or even traffic signage.

There were two people on the scooter, and they fell down the trench along with their vehicle.

The police said the car driver, who escaped unhurt, was at fault and would be booked for rash driving after the preliminary inquiry.

The accident took place at 3.50 pm when a Maruti Wagon R driven by Mahendra Gaudar (45) rammed into a scooter that Ruparam Devasi (40), a resident of Shivajinagar, was riding with Sukharam Devasi (32), a resident of Kothrud, as the pillion rider.

A witness said, "The car driver was going towards Yerawada at a high speed and changed lanes, ramming into a scooter coming from the opposite direction."

As the two scooter riders were trapped in the trench, the fire brigade was called to rescue them. Both of them are now under treatment for leg injuries.

The road work has been on under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission for a month now.
According to the Traffic Department, it had written to the Pune Municipal Corporation to construct speed-breakers and signage as the work was on. It had even suggested junction improvements.

But according to regular commuters on the road, none of the suggestion were taken seriously, making the road dangerous for commuters.

Vinay Deshpande, officer on special duty for JNNURM work, did not answer calls.
