Cartoonist Aseem Trivedi released from jail

Cartoonist Aseem Trivedi, who was arrested on Saturday for allegedly mocking the national emblem in his cartoons and was charged with sedition, was released from Arthur Road jail today.

Cartoonist Aseem Trivedi was released from Arthur Road today, three days after he was charged with sedition.

Trivedi, an activist of India Against Corruption (IAC), had been given bail by the Bombay High Court Tuesday, which he had accepted.


The court granted him bail on a personal bond of Rs 5000.

He was arrested in Mumbai on Saturday under IPC Section 124 (sedition), section 66 A of Information Technology Act and section 2 of Prevention of Insults to Nation Honour Act.

He was sent to judicial custody till September 24 on charges of sedition.

Trivedi, alleged to have mocked the national emblem and Parliament in his cartoons, was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by a member of Republican Party of India, Amit Katarnayea.

The case had led to outrage in the country.u00a0
