With a rising number of countries reporting instances of swine flu, demand for pork and pork products have gone down all over the world.
Pune, however, largely remains unaffected when it comes to pork consumption.
Kailash Pardeshi, who processes pork as ham, bacon and sausages said, "We eat pork daily. Pork comprises our staple diet and none of us, including our children, have stopped eating pork. The swine flu outbreak has not spread to India yet, so there is nothing to worry about."
Agrees Jagdish Pardeshi, owner of Mayur Piggery Farm in Dehuroad. He said, "PMC officials visited our farm on Thursday, checked our pigs and confirmed that none of them have the disease.
We have not experienced any fall in demand." As Kailash explained, "Usually, sales of pork are low in the summer due to rising temperatures. It picks up in winter. The demand for pork remains unchanged despite the news of the outbreak."
Manoj Pardeshi, who owns Quality Pork Shop, said, "I sell 150 kg of pork daily. As of now, I have not seen any significant drop in demand. Let us see how the situation shapes up."
However, Mumbai has seen a drastic fall in demand. Balam Pardeshi, owner of Diamond Pork Products Farm in Katilkhana, said when it comes to sending pork to the metropolis, business is down by approximately 50 per cent.
"We used to supply two tempos of butchered pork to Mumbai twice a week. Now, orders for a month have been cancelled and we will only send one tempo. From my shop in Mumbai, I supply to the educated class who, because they are aware of the outbreak in other countries, have stopped eating pork."
