Mumbaikars can look forward to some Delhi-style retail therapy in the near future, as municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte in his January 4 budget speech advocated the setting up of a craft bazaar, on the lines of Dilli Haat, in the city
“Providing marketing facilities is necessary for any livelihood generation scheme. To further expand the marketing setup, I propose to start a permanent exhibition centre like Dilli Haat, where self-help groups (SHGs) from Mumbai and all over Maharashtra would get a platform to showcase their products,” he said. The civic body chief’s comments came as a pleasant surprise for many SHGs as they have endured a long wait to start their businesses in full swing, but have failed to find a firm foothold.

However, the Mumbai Haat plan is at a very nascent stage, as the administration would have to first allocate an open space for the purpose. The idea is to develop this as a market, which would be open 24X7 for citizens, and handicrafts would be the chief attraction. Aslesha Ramgode, a resident of Kurla (W) and member of a self-help group, said, “We wanted a place where we could sell our handmade products and earn revenue. I would be happy if this bazaar comes up soon.”
