Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi's Twitter account was allegedly hacked on Wednesday night and obscenities posted on the timeline.

According to one of the tweets, the account seems to have been hacked by a group called 'legion'.

The abusive tweets were personal in nature and insulted Rahul Gandhi and his family.

The tweets were deleted, but new ones came up immediately.

Confirming the development, his office said efforts were being made to rectify the problem.

Gandhi's account was hacked around 8.45 PM and some messages with profanities were put out, but these were deleted soon thereafter.

The name of the verified twitter handle "@OfficeOfRG" was also changed.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala reacted to the incident by tweeting, "@OfficeOfRG hacked. Such lowly tactics will never drown sane voice of reason nor deter Rahul Gandhi from raising people's issues."

Twitterverse went into overdrive the moment the news came out. And as usual, Twitterati couldn't help but see the funny side of the incident, with many claiming that the account wasn't hacked and it was actually the Ganshi scion "being himself".

HERE ARE SOME OF THE DISBELIEVERS' REACTIONS:
