The city police are up in arms literally, in their effort to contain growing mugging and anti social activities in the city.
"It's a strong message to anti-social elements that the police would shoot them down if they indulge in criminal activities," Madiwala police sub-inspector Sirajuddin said.
Police officials claim that they have had "a soft approach" towards such activities so far, and intend to take a harder stance from now on. They admitted they got a moral boost after the city police chief appreciated and awarded JP Nagar police inspector SK Umesh for firing at the two chain snatchers and catching them.
"It's a positive sign for us, and from now on, such people would get treated in similar ways," Sirajuddin warned.
Madivala encounter
It started with a gang of four who have several criminal cases against them intercepting a couple who were returning from work and robbed them. When the woman tried to resist them, they tried to molest her, and brandishing their weapons, even threatened to rape her if she did not give up the valuables.
While the dacoits fled, Madiwala police constable Satish, who was passing by, rushed to the couple's help and also alerted the control room. Madiwala police inspector Purushotham and his team intercepted the gang, which turned on them with choppers. Purushotham opened fire at them, injuring two, Ambarish and Venugopal. The police also managed to arrest the others, Rajshekhar and Sunil.
Ambarish and Venugopal who received bullet injuries on their hands and legs have been admitted to St Johns and Hosmat hospital where they are said to be out of danger.
The police recovered the robbed valuables from the accused.
