Lucknow: The "current state" of Muslims is because they "do little work" during the month of Ramzan and Fridays and get enslaved by enslaving their women, according to Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor Lt Gen (retd) Zameeruddin Shah.

Addressing a function of AMU Old Boys Association yesterday, Shah, the brother of noted actor Naseeruddin Shah, said, "We do little work during the month of Ramzan or on Fridays. It minimises one's potential." He went on to add that "this is responsible for the current state of the community." He also criticised efforts to curb women empowerment within the community.

"Any civilisation that enslaves its women, which makes 50 per cent of the population unproductive, gets enslaved itself," the VC said.

Shah also condemned the Dadri incident where a 50-year-old man was lynched over rumours that he had eaten beef, but said that he did not view it from any specific perspective.

About a complaint filed by the varsity earlier against the right wing outfit Hindu Yuva Vahini, he said a case had been lodged against a youth for making objectionable comments against AMU.

The case was registered last month against the group's state president Sunil Singh and three others of the Vahini youth wing under various sections of the IPC.

The AMU authorities had accused the Vahini leaders of "deliberately" issuing communal statements designed to create unrest amongst AMU students.
