This comes after the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) publicised names of over 320 institutes in the country, 108 of which are in the state, offering technical and management courses not approved by it or the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The AICTE claimed students were paying exorbitant sums to seek admission in these institutions that do not have any right to confer degrees, which as a result would prevent students from getting jobs or pursue higher studies. Sources said that the AICTE has listed ICFAI Business School, Indian School of Business, J K Business School, Bharitya Vidya Bhavan and Sikkim Manipal University as institutes that run courses without its approval.
Education activists from Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS), which has been pressuring the DTE to seek action against these institutes, claimed there is no regulation to safeguard students from joining such institutes. “The AICTE and DTE are only issuing notices by releasing the list of unapproved institutes, but are not taking any action against them,” Gajanan Kale of MNVS said.
Director of Technical Education Dr S K Mahajan said the listing such institutes was on. “We are in the process of listing institutes running illegal and unapproved technical and management colleges or conferring fake degrees. We’ll submit the list with the state government and take action against them,” Mahajan said. u00a0
