Sales of oral contraceptives surge, demand for condoms declines
Delhiites are aiming higher to stay safer. As per a report by the city government, use of oral contraceptives has been on the rise in the Capital, while sales of condoms have been going downhill in 2009-10 compared to the previous year.
A yearly report of the Delhi government says, 2,97,358 oral contraceptive pills (cycles) were sold in the city in the year 2009-10 as against 1,81,412 sold in the year 2008-09 while condom sales were pegged at 82,55,000 in 2009-10 as against 94,76,000 a year ago.
The figures were released by in the annual statistical report, "Delhi Statistical Hand Book-2010" released by Finance Minister, AK Walia. Apart from this, many other startling figures have been revealed. The total number of mobile phones in the city has been counted at 2.82 crore as on March 31, 2010 against the total population of 1.38 crore (as per 2001 census).
According to the statistical handbook, the projected population as on October 1, 2010 in Delhi stood at 1.82 crore while it is projected it to go up to 2.84 crore in the year 2026.The report also said, infant mortality rate in Delhi in the year 2009 was 18.96 per 1,000 live births as against 18.38 in the previous year.
The per capita income in the city saw an increase of Rs 9,631 over 2007-08 figures at current prices, states data.
The report also indicates that there has hardly been any positive impact of the strengthening of public transport system in the city vis- -vis Delhi Metro and AC DTC fleet.
The report says, the city has 64,51,883 vehicles out of which 20,13,680 are cars and jeeps. The number of motorcycles has been estimated at 40,55,229. In the year 2008-09, the number of vehicles in the city was recorded at 60,11,731.u00a0

According to the statistics, Delhiites consumed 9817 million bottle cases of beer - Indian and imported combined - in 2009-2010 in comparison to 8122 million bottle cases in 2008-2009. The number of electricity subscribers increased from 34.38 lakh to 37.77 lakh in past one year while water consumption increased from 13257 lakh kilolitre to 13670 lakh kilolitre. Delhi consumed 807 thousand metric tonnes petrol in 2009-2010 in comparison to 762 thousand metric tonnes in 2008-2009. |
