The recovery of six hand grenades and two rubber bullets near Dimbhe dam in Koltawade village in Taluk Ambegaon on Monday resulted in panic. According to the police, some cattle grazers stumbled upon suspicious objects and thought they were bombs, leading to fear among the villagers.
On Tuesday, the Ghodegaon police went to the spot. API Manoj Yadav and his team suspect that the grenades were non-explosive. According to villagers, in 1994 an army boat ferrying villagers had turned turtle, resulting in the death of many. Curfew was ordered after villagers' emotions ran high against the army. The army was also deployed to control the mob. Now, villagers feel that the grenades were left behind by the army.
The police have sent the grenades to the Military Engineering College. Superintendent of Police Sandip Karnik told MiD DAY that the grenades were old, dating back to 1994. "They are from 1994 and probably were dumped by an army unit that was stationed there in that year. They are rusted now. They were mostly used for training purpose. We confiscated them and sent them for analysis. It's nothing serious," Karnik said.
