A senior police officer said that Diwan and Mahim who were operating from southern part of the city were into real estate and extortion unabated. The city police, who knew about their activities had made attempts to curb them, but because of their political affiliations, could not do much.
"While one was killed in suspected old rivalry, the others will be booked for the same and thus the police could end their activities without much effort," said a senior police officer with the Central Crime Branch (CCB).
Police Chief Shankar Bidari, who had taken serious note on their activities had written to the state home department seeking prosecution sanction to invoke the Goonda Act against Ali.
Bidari also said that the police had wanted to detain Ali in connection with several cases to question him. Meanwhile, the police have set a massive manhunt for assailants who hacked Ali in daylight.
"Though we suspect Mahim, we do don't have any concrete evidence against him," said deputy commissioner Sonia Narang, adding that they have not arrested anyone in this connection.
