Patient claims doctors demanded more money than was reflected in the bill

Two doctors of a private hospital are under police radar for allegedly asking for extortion money from one of their patients. Leela Keshavlal Kaushik, resident of Kharadi area, was admitted to Ratna Memorial Hospital for the treatment of lung cancer.

Leela alleged that after her discharge from the hospital and bill payment, she was confined in a room by
Dr Anantbhushan Ranade and his colleague Vishal Datar and asked for more money. According to a complaint filed by her husband, a guard was also called and she was threatened to shell out more money than what was mentioned in the bill.

Although the incident took place in September last year, the court has now passed an order asking the police to file a complaint against the duo. The case was registered at Chatushrungi police station. The police have slapped various sections under IPC for extortion, confinement and forgery of documents against the doctors.
Medical oncologist Dr Anantbhushan Ranade claimed that he wasn't aware of the development in this case.

Old case
"A complaint was lodged last year but I had written an application clearing that I was not even present at the hospital at the time of theu00a0 incident. I thought the matter was settled. Also, I don't have any colleague
named Datar."

The co-accused Datar, who works as administrator at Ratna Memorial hospital also claimed to have no knowledge of the case. "It's an old case. I will have to look into case files. I can not respond now," he said.
