"My main aim was to streamline a sense of discipline within the force, namely betterment of the officers and instilling a sense of confidence among them for better work. These included in-time promotions at the junior level, compulsory weekly offs, welfare funds, investigation expenses, rewarding the officers for better performance and streamlining the beat system. Though these tasks look ordinary, they had a great impact on the force and worked as a great morale booster," he said.

How did you get into police service?
It was not by choice, but by chance. I got selected for the IPS in my first attempt, and I decided to take it up.

How do you compare the state police with its counterparts?
Bangalore is as safe as any other European city.u00a0 I am very sure that the Bangalureans feel safer and enjoy their freedom of speech and expression than any other city or country.
As far as policing is concerned, the police are best compared with any police force in the world. For instance, you can imagine the number of successful recoveries of stolen valuables (theft cases) amounts to crores of rupees, which never happens in the anywhere in the world.
In European countries if your house is burgled, the police books a case, and asks you to approach the insurance company for recovery.u00a0
That is the end of the case. There is scope for improvement in the department, but by and large they are doing a great job.
What's your view on terrorism and the Naxal problem in the state?
Its nothing compared with other states. If we look at records of the past two years, there is no instance of active Naxal movement in the state. However, when it comes to terrorism, all I have to say is that we need to stop glorifying terrorists and stop creating a fear psychosis among the general public.
What measures should be taken up to better the efficiency of the force?
Though the state police are doing a good job, lot more needs to be done. For instance, the officers are suffering from work pressure, because they have a multiple tasks ranging from law and order and crime investigations.
Each station has been burdened with 100 cases per year on an average. If you do the math, the officer is expected to solve at least three cases a day on an average, which is humanly impossible.
Even so, the officers are performing better. The measures I chalked out for them were a shift system (eight hours), and fixing a work schedule for the officers in terms of solving cases.

What are your plans after retirement?
I have planned to read, write and travel, which I like the most.
