Drool-worthy line-up for Mumbai’s movie buffs

Choose from over 75 national and international films you won't otherwise get your hands on, at the 8th Third Eye Film Festival that kicks off today

It's not often that Mumbaikars get to watch films by award-winning directors Jafar Panahi and Magdi Ahmad Ali all in a matter of days, but it's all happening at the 8th Third Eye Film Festival. The organisers have gone all out to create a mighty treat for movie buffs, with a special focus on films from Egypt.

Films from as far as Japan, Iran, Turkey, Korea, Singapore and Afghanistan make it to screens at YB Chavan Auditorium, Nariman Point, and Plaza Theatre, Dadar. Split into 11 categories, the festival will showcase nearly 78 masterpieces. This year, the country in focus is Egypt, so watch out for films by Mohamed Mostafa, Daoud Abdel Sayed and Khaled Youssef, among others. "Since 2000, Egyptian cinema has been getting better each year, with their films and the makers attracting international attention," says festival director, Sudhir Nandgaonkar.

The director in focus this year, is Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. "Panahi is one Iranian who is quite famous in India. He is a much talked about filmmaker but his films are not easily accessible," says Nandgaonkar, explaining the reason behind including three of Panahi's most loved films. Japanese filmmakers Naruse Mikio (a contemporary of Akira Kurosawa) and Nagisa Oshima, who are also part of the line-up, have influenced cinema of the 20th century but are alien to most young film lovers.
