A 25-year-old man, Sunil Nilkanth Andre, was stabbed on Monday night and died yesterday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
His brother Kaluram (35) lodged a complaint with the Swargate police station yesterday.
The police identified the suspects as Umesh Bhise and Dinkar Shendge, both of whom are residents of Maharshinagar.
According to officials at Swargate police station, Bhise was involved in nine cases of robbery, theft and assault.
Childhood friends
The police said that Sunil, a resident of Maharshinagar, Swargate, and the two suspects knew one another since childhood and had no serious discord that could have led to murder. But locals informed the police that before the incident was reported, the three and some of their other friends had gone drinking together.
The police now suspect that the murder is a result of arguments under the influence of alcohol. Senior Police Inspector Rajkumar Gaikwad of the Swargate police station said, "The matter came to light around 10.30 pm.
Sunil's cousin Kailash informed Kaluram that Sunil was lying in a pool of blood after some people stabbed him with sharp weapons near Durga Mata Mandir. When Kaluram reached the spot with Kailash, the culprits had already left."
Police officials said that Bhise and Shendge were last seen with Sunil on Monday night.
