Man from industrialist's village arrested after cops check cell records

A Youth who allegedly demanded Rs 25 lakh in ransom from a 62-year-old city-based industrialist has been arrested by the Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) of the Crime Branch.
The arrested man, Datta Pandurang Kate (26), and the industrialist come from a village in Kolhapur district.
The industrialist has a factory in Hadapsar which makes ring gauges and has been residing in the city for 20 years. Kate was introduced to him a year ago, and the two became friendly.
Financial crunch
"Kate's financial condition was not good and so he tried to make some quick money by making extortion calls," said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Prabhakar Patil. "Kate is not a hardened criminal and no organised crime syndicate is involved in the case."
An FIR was filed against Kate and an accomplice at the Hadapsar police station.
"Kate procured a SIM card in some other person's name and called and messaged the complainant on June 18 and 19 and threatened to kill his family, including his two sons," said a police officer on condition of anonymity. "After getting threat calls for two days, the industrialist filed a complaint with the AEC on June 20. The mobile number as well as its call records were traced, which helped us nab the suspect."
Interrogation
Kate's call records threw up the name of an associate of his from Old Sanghvi. Sustained interrogation of that person led the police team to Kolhapur and Kate.
The evidence is strong against Kate in the case, claimed the police.
