"The victim - Dhanashree Patil - is our former student, but she was not on the rolls for the past six months," Principal GJ Vikhe-Patil of Amritvahini College of Engineering said.
The college is in Sangamner town of Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. The victim lived here.
The suicide was discovered early Wednesday at Dhanashree's home in Nashik. After receiving the information from some friends, Vikhe-Patil immediately called up her parents who are presently in Kerala.
He added that Dhanashree had failed in several subjects in her final year Mechanical Engineering course examinations last year.
As per the college and university rules, she was required to first clear the backlog of the subjects in which she had failed before she could be re-admitted to the institution to pursue her engineering studies further, he explained.
The Nashik police are investigating the matter and are waiting for the victim's family members to arrive from Kerala.
Two days ago, three Mumbai students committed suicide within 24 hours, shocking the country's commercial capital.
