Fake cops flee with student's bike, licence

Deepika Pawar (19), a first year information technology student, was threatened by two men posing as police officials. They later fled with her licence and bike.u00a0

The incident took place on MIT Road in Kothrud on Sunday night at around 8.30 pm.

Deepika has filed the complaint against the two unidentified suspects at the Kothrud police station in this regard. The victim hails from Jalgaon and is pursuing her studies in the city.u00a0

u00a0"Deepika had her dinner and was returning home alone on Sunday night. When she came near the Chaitanya health club on MIT road, the two unidentified suspects stopped her. They were posing as cops and asked Deepika to furnish her licence and other documents," said Police Sub-Inspector N R Kenche. "When she gave her licence to them, the suspects asked her to come to the Kothrud police station. The suspects then took her documents and fled on her bike." When the victim realised that she was cheated, she filed a complaint. The search for the duo is on and the vehicle is yet to be traced.u00a0

u00a0Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Anant Shinde said, "We have conducted a meeting of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) from all divisions in the city. They have been asked to increase police presence on road by improving foot patrolling and putting up more fixed points for checking of vehicles."

u00a0When asked about the fake cops gang active in city, Additional C P Shinde said, "Usually the suspects are habitual offenders and belong to the age group of 35-40 years. They usually wear brown trousers and shirts
and have short hair so that their appearance resembles that of a policeman. Also these gangs target women who they feel can be hassled in lonely areas. They are habitual offenders."
