Chain snatchers are back with a vengeance. In the last 48 hours, cops say, there have been five cases of chain snatching been reported. Authorities told MiD DAY that Sahakar Nagar area alone had reported three cases of snatching between 6.15 and 6.45 pm on Tuesday.

The first was at Rakshalekha society when Uma Subhash Saudalgekar, a 63-year-old woman was robbed at Chavan Nagar on Pune-Satara road. The second victim of chain snatching was Aparna Apte and the third was Anuradha Talikoti at Shriram Sahnivas society. Another incident occurred on Prabhat Road when 64-year-old Sushila Vinayak Jadhav was robbed of her chain while returning home after purchasing grocery items on Wednesday evening.

The last victim of chain snatching was Karve Nagar resident Sunita Joshi. However, two helpful bystanders helped her nab the accused that was later identified as Nagendrappa Honnik (22), a resident of Vitthalwadi.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Anant Shinde said, "We have been quite successful in curbing chain-snatching incidents but a few suspects are still at large. There's a possibility that the suspects must be changing partners." He further added, "We have zeroed in on two suspects and our anti-chain snatching squad is working on it to nab them at the earliest."

Special squad

The special squad comprises of nine constables who conduct checks on criminals recently released from Yerwada jail, set traps in different areas.
