Pune chain Faasos' first outlet in the city will need to get basics right -- starting with what emerges from its kitchen
Freshly made desi wraps, curries, kebabs and biryanis delivered in super quick time. That's the Faasos' promise. What they should add as a conditions apply clause, is that the super-quick time ensures that they compromise on the taste, texture, quantity and quality of food. The ten-outlet strong wraps, rolls and kebabs joint from Pune makes its way into Mumbai -- but loses the flavour, somewhere, along the Expressway.
Paneer Tikka
When you reach Faasos, neon signage and colourful graffiti on its walls makes the place look enticing; the cramped interiors however, allow lineage to a poor cousin of Subway or even Caf ufffd Coffee Day. Even the recently opened Cheelizza offers better and that is just a fancy vegetable sandwich shop. If you do wish to try the Faasos experience, take-away might be your best bet.
While the service is prompt, quick and friendly, the food leaves much to be desired. The Chicken Tikka (Rs 80) was roasted and toasted till all the flavour had been succinctly drained out of it. It was dry and appeared unappetising. The pieces were devoid of any kind of clarified butter that completely robbed it of its taste. Lack of onion rings meant a few more negative marks.
The Chicken Reshmi (Rs 80) tasted no different from the Chicken Tikka. Sure, they were healthy dishes, perhaps made for the health conscious -- but the food devoid of taste, is a definite no-no. The Reshmi Tikka lacked a smooth, unctuous marinade. It was strictly okay.
The Paneer Tikka (Rs 60) came with soft, juicy chunks of paneer marinated in Tandoori masala and grilled. Sadly, it wasn't grilled to perfection. While appearing light golden, the marginally undercooked paneer was dry and dull. Also, a wee bit of garnishing with coriander and lemon slices would have been welcome. In a market where a new eatery opens around the corner everyday, the lackadaisical flavoured food from Faasos might find it hard to stand tall.
