Shera is all set for a makeover. Yes, the Games mascot will be dressed in floral mosaics to welcome the participants and visitors from across the world. As the Delhi administration has decided to install the structures at various venues and prominent locations in the city, the Games mascot will surely be a cynosure for all eyes.

A team headed by principal secretary, P K Tripathi and officials of Central Public Works department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council and Delhi Jal Board had recently visited Japan to polish their skills in mosaic art.

"Mosaic structures and art is very popular in Japan, China, and Canada. The trip was undertaken to study the culture, particularly to craft Shera and the CWG logo from flowers and plants. The festival was hosted by Japan in the month of March," said the official.

The construction of these structures has already begun and work is expected to be completed before the Games begin in October. The structures would cost about one to two lakh rupees each. "We plan to install the floral Shera all over the Games venues, but it will depend on the availability of space.

The structures would be of 8 to 10 feet long. It will take around five to six months to construct them. By the time the Commonwealth Games begin in October, the huge floral configuration would be completed," the official claimed.

Making a mesh

An iron-mesh structure in the shape of Shera and Games logo will be cut out first. After creating the structure, it will be covered with a net, made of polythene. The Shera and logo structure will then be stuffed with soil. After that the plants of required colour tones, which are cultured or grown in a greenhouse, will be planted through the tiny holes of the poly-net. Once the plants start growing out after one or two months of plantation, they will be trimmed as per the requirement and a fine structure of floral mosaic will be laid out. Though the mosaic lasts between one and three months, the iron-mesh structure can be re-used.
