'Friends' take Rs 10 lakh to ensure he passes exams, don't deliver

A French student in the city recently experienced its two sides. Rudolph Baranowska, who was pursuing his final year MBBS from M S Ramaiah Medical College, was cheated out of Rs 10 lakh by his 'friends', but thanks to quick action by the Cubbon Park police, they were caught.

When Baranowska, a resident of Raja Mahal Vilas Extension, was unable to do well in his final year exams, he took the advice of his friend D J Vinod and met Devaraj, ostensibly a PRO with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS). Devaraj told Rudolph he would ensure he passed if paid Rs 10 lakh.

New demand

Rudolph paid the amount, but when the results were declared, he found he had failed. A few days later Devaraj called Rudolph and asked for another Rs 30 lakh.

When Rudolph demanded his Rs 10 lakh back, Devaraj allegedly told him to contact his boss Sunai Reddy, "a very powerful person."

Rough bunch

"He is RGUHS Examination Controller. His brother works for the CBI and hence he cannot be touched," Devaraj allegedly said. When Rudolph called Reddy, Devaraj answered. He allegedly disguised his voice and threatened him saying, "I will see how you pass your exam. I will see to that you don't get a medical certificate from the Medical Council of India." After heavy bargaining, Rudolph and Devaraj struck a deal for Rs 15 lakh.u00a0

However, Rudolph realised something was wrong and filed a police complaint.

Police action

The police picked up Vinod and Devraj who confessed all. Ajay R M, sub-inspector, Cubbon Park police station said, "Vinod and Devaraj hail from West Bengal. They are college dropouts. They wanted to make quick money."

The duo have been booked for cheating and remanded in judicial custody. "We recovered the money and gave it to Rudolph," said Ajay.
