Additional Sessions Judge S D Darane yesterday sentenced Maulana Hussain Shabbir Gangavali (29), a native of Bhatkal, to five years of rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 in the fake currency case.
If Gangavali fails to pay the fine he will be awarded an additional imprisonment of six months. Gangavali has been found guilty of possession of forged or counterfeit currency notes or bank notes.
The Pune Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) said that Riyaz Bhatkal, Iqbal Bhatkal and Ahmed Yasin, the founders and top operatives of Indian Mujahideen, who are also among the six absconding accused in German Bakery blast, had provided fake currency to Gangavali.
Another case
Gangavali is a suspect in another case registered with the Ullal police station in Mangalore and is allegedly one of the close aids of the Bhatkal brothers, the suspects in German Bakery blast case, who are absconding and are suspected to have crossed the border. Gangavali was earlier arrested from a spot near Pace Computers near Janwadi mosque on December 30, 2008 and has been in jail since his arrest.
