Actor Deepika Padukone admits that history didn't interest her much during school. Dates were always tough to recall, she adds. "I don't remember coming across the Chittagong Uprising in the textbooks at all. If it was there, it must have been a mere mention whereas an entire chapter should have been kept aside for it. We all know about Gandhiji and Bhagat Singh but there were so many other freedom fighters," says Padukone, who looks upto Gandhi, so much so that she wishes she were his granddaughter. Padukone reckons that the meaning of independence hasn't changed over the years. "Kalpana Dutta was akin to today's girls; she was a very strong, independent, ambitious, revolutionary woman," she says of her character in Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, "Today's girls are headstrong and independent too."
