VERDICT: SMASHING

THE last time Kolkata band Supersonics performed in Mumbai at Hard Rock Cafe, it had none of the livewire energy they packed into their fantastic debut Maby Baking that released last year.

The four-member band unleashed a tight, wired set perfect to kick the adrenaline in at the beginning of the week. Drummer Avinash Chordia deftly balances force with finesse, driving the set forward. Ananda Sen's easy, affected yet immensely appealing vocals set against the restless arrangements make for a surprisingly well put-together sound. The Supersonics fired all cylinders with numbers like Far from the human race, We are we are and Major minor. The audience had some elderly sorts, who had lingered on after their high school alumni meet at the venue, whose demands for The Doors covers got a scornful 'Sorry man, we only do originals' from Sen.

Of course, the boys did team up with Mumbai band The Mayvyns (who had generously lent the Kolkata band their gear) for a cover, before wrapping up the show with the growling 170. This is not a grouse, considering the rest of the set was a riot.
