Gorge on the big, fat Gujarati thali

Chances of fitting into our LBD this New Year's eve are slim. Blame it on the incredibly courteous staff at Prisha, who don't believe in stopping at second servings of their delicious traditional thali

Considering the barrage of weddings on our itinerary this month, we weren't exactly excited at the thought of another elaborate thali experience. Never mind the resolve, it's impossible to under-eat a Gujarati thali, especially when the attendants insist on repeating servings of ghee-soaked Puran Polis and calorie-high Fruit Shrikhand.

Nestled in a popular Dadar hotel, the interiors of Prisha remind you of the remains of the conference room that has been modified to make way for its present avatar. The stark, somewhat clashing d ufffdcor and an LCD television contribute to the observation. Pattachitra art dons its walls and Rajasthani puppets are strung on the pillars. Thankfully, the confusion ends with the d ufffdcor. Prisha gets its food right.

You don't have options -- just one unlimited thali, served for lunch and dinner (Rs 195).

Our silver thali was soon filled with yummies that weren't oozing with oil. The thali comes with an option of three veggies, perfectly spiced; the Kaju Paneer Masala was our favourite. The accompanying Fruit Shrikhand was not as thick or creamy as we would have liked but went well with the phulka puris.

The sweet quotient in the dal and kadhi was offset by the Lata Laving, a 'farsan' which didn't have too many cloves added to the patty. Those looking for a more authentic experience should try the rotla (a thick, bajra roti) topped with a pinch of jaggery.

By the time the rice preparations arrived, we were squirming inside our well-fitted denims. All thanks to the insistent and courteous staff who had every intention of feeding us servings that could last us through three meals.

A foodie tip -- add a dollop of ghee to your khichdi, vital stats be damned. Those with an exceptionally sweet tooth might be in for a slight disappointment since there is just one dessert on the plate. Neither did any specific dish emerge as the overwhelming winner. Still, we went home happy.
