Ex-PM reportedly asked son to avoid numbers that end in six and eight during the BBMP polls
Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda is known for his belief in fortune-tellers, astrologers and their ilk. Not surprisingly, he is at it again for the BBMP polls.
Deve Gowda has reportedly directed son and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy to ensure that the number of wards their party contests ends with either five, seven or nine.
This, according to insiders, will ensure a landslide victory for the Gowda family in the polls.
Kumaraswamy, who is overseeing the poll exercise, initially decided that the party would contest on 197 seats but whittled the number later to 195.

"He (Deve Gowda) has strictly directed Kumaraswamy to ensure that JD (S) won't contest in all 198 wards, as 8 was inauspicious," said a party source. "Hence it was initially decided to contest from only 197 wards."
Number game
The BBMP polls are no different this time when it comes to leaders' faith in astrological and numerological calculations. And in case of Deve Gowda led JD (S), it's worse.
An astrological prediction is said to be reason behind the number of wards finalised for party's contest in BBMP polls happening on March 28 in a total of 198 wards.
Going by his lucky numbers, as predicted by some trusted numerologists and astrologers, Gowda has strictly directed Kumaraswamy to avoid number 8, said sources.
Numbers 5, 7 and 9, added sources, were said to be lucky for Gowda. Following which, Gowda had advised Kumaraswamy not to contest in 198 wards, as the number ends with 8, fearing an adverse impact.
Kumaraswamy, following father's advice, though initially decided to field candidates in 197 wards, finally ended with 195, which also ends with 5, one of three numbers astrologers predicted lucky for Gowda, to make an impact in BBMP polls. Kumaraswamy avoided number 196 and made it 195, though 196 was an option after 197.
'Internal matter'
"I have advised him (Deve gowda) to be careful about numbers," said Basavraj, a Kaiwara based numerologist and astrologer. "When we last met I had advised 5, 7 and 9 are his lucky numbers.
He must be following this." The party will not have its candidates in Arkere, Ganesh mandir and HSR layout wards.
However, the party spokesperson, when called, had no particular reason for not fielding candidates in 3 wards.

"There is no specific reason except it is our leaders' decision," said Ramesh Babu, JD (S) spokesperson. "We will contest in 195 wards. There are some internal reasons behind the decision."
