The physically challenged employees of the Government Photo Zinco Press finally got a reason to smile. Referring to a news report published in MiD DAY (‘Disabled workers need help going to loo’, on March 7), Congress MLC Mohan Joshi recently called for an attention motion on adversaries faced by the press employees.

Soon after Joshi raised the issue, funds were sanctioned and western toilets were installed for the 15 handicapped employees, who were finding it difficult to use Indian toilets.

President of Government Photo Zinco Employees Organization Anant Dongare said the Public Works Department finally woke up from its slumber after Joshi called for an attention motion in assembly to highlight the plight of the handicapped employees at the press.

“We had sent letters to the PWD at least twenty times, asking it for better toilet facilities in the department, where the handicapped employees were working. But the department failed to acknowledge the matter. Meanwhile, we also approached Joshi and told him about the issued faced by these workers,” Dongare said.

He added that the waterproofing work of the restroom was almost done and the western toilets were installed a couple of days ago. “PWD officials frequently visit the press for inspection,” Dongare said.

Commenting on the developments, one of the handicapped employees Rajendra Darawade said it would have been better had the restroom was built on the same floor where the other handicapped employees work because even now they have to take their colleague’s help every time they want to visit the restroom. Darawade is visually impaired and a diabetic.

“I appreciate the development and happy that government considered our initial demand of having Western toilets in the press,” Darawade said. Joshi said that while calling the attention motion, he showed the clipping of news report published in MiD DAY to the Chairman of Legislative Council to highlight the plight of the handicapped employees and the sorry state of the press.

“Along with better toilet facility, I also demanded new machines for the press. I am glad that funds worth Rs 11.80 crore were sanctioned for this purpose. Replying to my call for attention motion, Minister of Industries Sachin Ahir also declared that the vacant posts in the press would be filled within six months,” Joshi said.u00a0
