The incident came to light when TCI Freight, a cargo-company, received a complaint from Tata Engineering Locomotive Company (TELCO) that they had not received a consignment. On verifying its records, the freight company realised that they had delivered a brand new vehicle engine, worth lakhs, to three people who had come posing as TELCO representatives.
How they did it
In his complaint to the Kalasipalya police, the company's chief, P Mishra said they had received a consignment from Lucknow for delivery to TELCO in Jakkur. On August 17, TCI received a call fromu00a0 TELCO saying that they would send their representatives to collect the consignment. The caller also asked TCI to arrange a vehicle for transportation of the engine.
A few days back, three men wearing TELCO uniforms approached them seeking delivery of the consignment. While receiving the goods, the trio said that they had forgotten to bring the company seal and said they would issue the receipt later.
The company believed them, arranged for transportation and hauled the engine onto the truck. The trio
paid Rs 1,935 towards transportation charges and got into the vehicle.
They then asked the driver to take them towards Yeshwanthpura. They got off by the roadside with the consignment and said they would mail the acknowledgment receipt.
When TCI tried to contact TELCO to get the delivery acknowledgment, they said they hadn't received the consignment and also that they hadn't sent any representatives to TCI.
