An infamous car thief, allegedly involved in around 500 cases of vehicle theft in north India, Monday again dodged arrest after an exchange of fire with policemen chasing him, police said

Manoj Bakkarwala, who has escaped from police custody many times, managed to escape from police net here early Monday morning.

Police were trailing his i20 car from Karkari turning in east Delhi and when it crossed the Yamuna Bridge near Delhi Secretariat in central Delhi, they intercepted Bakkarwala's vehicle at around 1 a.m.

As police closed in, 36-year-old Bakkarwala tried to escape and reversed his car, hitting Sub-Inspector Sanjeev.

"When he felt that he cannot escape, he opened fire at us. He fired twice while police party fired four rounds," a police officer said.

Bakkarwala, however, managed to escape in the dark.

Bakkarwala escaped from the custody of Haryana Police from Saket court on his way back to Bhondsi Jail on June 20.

Delhi Police Commissioner B.K. Gupta announced a reward of Rs.50,000 for clues on Bakkarwala, who hails from Nangloi in west Delhi.

Bakkarwala, who was evading police for years, was arrested by Delhi Police's Special Cell on July 15, 2009 following investigations into inputs about him disposing off stolen cars in Chandigarh.

Bakkarwala is an expert in driving cars and preferred to steal them late at night or early in the morning, preferably on wide roads with no traffic signals so that he could escape easily.

"He has a lavish lifestyle and was in relationship with a girl in Haryana who is doing her MBA," the officer said

Bakkarwala, who started his criminal life in 1998, was first arrested in 1998 and then in 2003.

He continued with his criminal activities once he was out on bail.

In 2007, he was arrested by the Gurgaon police but escaped in July 2008 with the help of an associate.

On May 8, 2009, he managed to give the slip to Delhi Police in Kanjhawala area after being spotted. He was hurt in a brief gunfight and after escaping, reportedly went to Chandigarh.
