Files police case against best friend's husband for making false promises of marriage to gain sexual favours
Hargobind Kaur (34, name changed), headmistress of a city school, filed a complaint on Tuesday against Arokiaraj Geoffery, her best friend Mythili's husband, alleging that he has been making false promises of marriage to her for the past three years to gain sexual favours.
Sources in Sanjay Nagar police station revealed that Kaur alleged Geoffery had declared his intentions to marry her in her family's presence. He allegedly went back on his promise and started harassing her physically, prompting Kaur to lodge a complaint.
Kaur was introduced to Geoffery by Mythili in 1998, when the friends were teachers in Sunrise English School in Hebbal. The friends used to visit each other's houses.
Affair gets known
Geoffery allegedly convinced Kaur that he loved her and that his relationship with his wife had soured. When Mythili learnt of her husband's affair, she allegedly took to calling Kaur every time Geoffery went missing from home. Geoffery then convinced Kaur that they would have to marry soon because the affair had become the talk of the town.
Kaur states in her complaint that in May 2006, Geoffery came to Kaur's home when she was alone and smeared sindoor on her forehead, and declared that they were now man and wife. He also promised to formalise their relationship with a wedding soon.
Getting physical
"Geofferey convinced me to accompany him to a Chennai hotel, where he forced me to have a physical relationship with him. My family asked me to leave our RMS Colony home after they learnt of our trip to Chennai.
Geoferry then arranged for a house on rent for me,u00a0 and kept visiting me for sex," Kaur states in her complaint.
Geoffery reportedly grew evasive when Kaur probed him about his promises to marry her in the days that followed. He allegedly became physically abusive, when Kaur kept prodding him.
Speaking to MiD DAY Kaur said, "Who told you about all this? I don't want to comment on anything, as my complaint is still being investigated," said Kaur.
Despite several attempts to reach him, Geoffery remained unavailable for comment.
Nagaraj M, inspector, Sanjay Nagar police station denied that Kaur had filed a complaint with them. "No such complaint has been filed with us," the inspector said. When reminded that MiD DAY was in possession of a copy of the complaint (0271/09) filed by Hargobind on Tuesday, the officer refused to comment.
